When you have decided to stop smoking. One of the first things you must know and understand there was no physical reason for you to start. Your body had absolutely no requirement for tobacco the way it requires food, water, sleep and exercise. Many of the chemicals present in cigarettes like nicotine and cyanide actually poisons the body and can kill in high enough doses.
The body is smart it goes on defense when it is being poisoned. This is why it most likely took you several tries to get started smoking. Most first time smokers feel pain or burning in the throat and lungs and some feel sick and even throw up the first few times they try tobacco, this should be a clue that smoking is not good for you.
It doesn’t take long to become addicted to cigarettes, but the consequences of the poisoning happen slowly. The long-term affect of smoking will cause serious health problems to develop, like heart disease, stroke, emphysema (break down of lung tissue) and many types of cancer including lung, throat, stomach and bladder cancer. Smoking also increases your risk of infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. There is not one organ in your body that smoking will not have a negative affect on, and each time you light up, that single cigarette takes about 5 – 20 minutes off of your life.
All forms of tobacco: cigarettes, pipes, cigars and smokeless tobacco are hazardous. It doesn’t help to substitute products that seem like they’re better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes. The only thing that really helps the problems associated with smoking is to stay smoke free.
Your decision to stop smoking must be positive, you must really want to quit or you will never be able to over come the addiction to nicotine. Your concern for your health must be stronger than your desire to smoke. You must prepare yourself for quitting; try not to focus on how difficult you believe it will be for you to stop smoking.
In addition to your health and obligations to others; develop strong personal reasons to stop smoking. For example think on all the time you waste taking cigarette breaks and running out to buy a pack, hunting for a light etc. Think about how your persistent bad breath (halitosis) offends others. Some have found it to be helpful to write down all the reasons you want to quit and repeat one of the reasons ten times every night before going to bed. You also need to condition yourself physically: start a modest exercise program; drink more fluids; get plenty of rest and avoid fatigue.
Having prepared yourself to stop smoking there are three main hurdles you will come up against. First the comrades you hung out with at break time for a quick smoke will tempt you to smoke and the peer pressure can be enormous. You should let all your friends know your intention is to quit smoking and ask for their support.
Next you may find that your smoking friends are the main culprits and this ties in with the first hurdle of temptation. When they ask you why you are quitting it can take your focus off your desire to quit and possibly even make you question your decision and wonder if you are doing the right thing or if it is really worth it.
The third challenge is determining how to stop smoking. There are many products on the market each claiming to help you to stop, but you must realize that they are only going to aid you with your fight against your addiction because the main force behind you being able to stop smoking is YOU.
If you want to quit smoking now and reap all the benefits that come with being a non-smoker you need to understand there are no magic answers and a complete plan is required for success!
